Les Mangoustes de Beauvais
Stefan Rinck, 2017. Limestone, 250 x 145 x 140cm
Mangouste is French for “mongoose”, a small carnivorous mammal native to Asia and Africa that is easily tamed. Is that why these ones are tied up with rope? A unique piece in limestone, Les Mangoustes de Beauvais should be understood as an allegory and a prelude to the artisans and excellence surrounding Beaupassage. Their size recalls ancient gargoyles escaped from a Roman belfry. They form a totem with three sides and three bodies, displaying the forbidden expression of those who question their condition.
